Thank you letter from : President and CEO, National Wildlife Federation

Dear Bonnie,

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving a voice to the treasured wildlife suffering daily in the Gulf.

As of today, it’s been two months since the BP oil spill crisis first began. I know you’ve seen the heartbreaking images of oil covered pelicans and shorebirds in the Gulf Coast. I know you’ve heard the latest reports that have upped the estimate of oil still spilling to an outrageous 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil a day. That’s between 1.5 million and 2.5 million gallons of oil a day contaminating our waters and threatening wildlife and sensitive habitats!

Thanks to you, we’re on the front lines of this crisis working every day to aid wildlife, mobilize volunteers and get the word out about the oil spill’s devastating consequences. Your support is helping us:

* Deploy a surveillance network of over 2,000 volunteers to Louisiana and Florida to locate distressed wildlife and help with long term restoration efforts.

* Restore vulnerable nesting and breeding grounds as well as other delicate ecosystems found throughout the Gulf Coast for birds, sea turtles and other animals.

* Educate the public about the oil spill and its impacts on wildlife.

* Push state and national leaders to support restoration of habitat in the Gulf Coast.

These efforts have only been made possible through the generosity of people like you. I know it’s hard watching the news and seeing wildlife suffering at the hands of this tragedy. For more ways you can help, please see the sidebar to the right.

The BP oil spill is a real environmental catastrophe — certainly the worst spill in United States history. By giving your support and helping NWF spread the word, you are a key part of the solution. Thank you for all you’re doing to safeguard wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sincerely,
Larry Schweiger
President & CEO, National Wildlife Federation
